What I felt in Russia

Basic Science Program

Kazan Federal University

I joined super molecules laboratory in Kazan Federal University (KFU) for about 2 weeks. During this period, I synthesized a chemical compound and carried out functional reactions with that. I study organic synthesis chemistry in Japan so that I think experiments are so similar. Before going to Russia, I wondered there are some differences about experiments between Japan and Russia or not. They are the same that basic operations of syntheses and method of analyses even if there are a few differences about equipment and experimental methods.

These are information of dangerous reagents.

I met much surprise compared with Japan. Firstly, atmosphere in the lab is friendly even if we carry out some experiments. Furthermore, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) machine which has high technology is used by everyone in the chemical building.

More surprisingly, there are so many ladies who study chemistry. I think that it is common in the world that not so many ladies study chemistry because this is my surrounding. KFU was in the summer vacation so I could meet a few students and professor at first. Doctor degree student and professor who I met firstly are ladies. After 3 days later, I met a man for the first time and he is my supervisor. As the days passed, I could meet many students and there were more ladies than in Japan.

From right, my supervisor, Dima; me; and my friend, Yula; in the lab. We wear the lab coats which have different color!
