Valuable Experience in Russia

Tsuyuki Saito

Division of Material Chemistry, Kanazawa University

Basic Science Program

Irkutsk State University

I studied at Chemistry Faculty of ISU for a month and had many great experience.

I belonged to Theoretical and Applied Organic Chemistry laboratory and did research. We modified chitosan for application to pharmaceutical industry. We did several measurements to confirm that the product has polyampholyte properties. One of the measurements was an old method that I had never done in Japan, so I got new knowledge about this. During reaction, our professor taught us Russian language. Everyone in our laboratory was so kind to me that I was able to enjoy very much.

We also had many experience about cultural exchange and excursion to some place. My friend in Russia invited us to an event of chemistry students, and we played sports and games. I was very happy to have many friends in Russia. When we visited Lake Baikal, I learned a lot about the lake at the Baikal Museum. We cruised on the lake by ship and were able to feel nature with my skin.

Since English was not the native language of each other, it was not easy to communicate, but I tried to tell by using gestures. I realized that what was important was the feeling to convey.

At last, I would like to express my gratitude to the staff who provided assistance to stay in Russia, and wonderful teachers and students in ISU. I was impressed by their heartwarming attitude. I want to visit Irkutsk again if there is another opportunity.
