Cultural Exchange Program
Taking part in cultural exchange program was quite a unique experience. While being fairly accustomed to Japanese traditions and culture, I have never before shared life-experiences with locals of small village.
The program consisted of two parts: one week - living in Kanazawa and building up knowledge about communication between local people and nature. We have visited water purification plants as well as got to know recycling process in Kanazawa city. Second week - life in two local villages, where partnership between nature and people helps create sustainable development of region.
Even though Gokayama village and Shiramine village are facing similar issues (as it is happening all over Japan) such as depopulation, aging of society, low birth rate, etc. due to the government support and protection of historical folk villages included in the UNESCO world heritage list, they strive to attract tourists to the region.
Experiencing life in rural area of Japan helped me realize the importance of development of the local regions. Preserving natural and historical landmarks while supporting small enterpises will lead to steady development of local communities. In return, they might become an alternative for stress-induced life in metropolises. However, in order to achieve these goals it is necessary to revitalize interest towards countryside and create welcoming atmosphere for tourists both local and foreign. Local festivals and preservation of historical landscape constitutes the authenticity of the region. Therefore, I do believe that both villages of Gokayama and Shiramine accomplish that mission.
