Short-Term Study in Russia
Kohei Shiotani
Division of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Kanazawa University
Advanced Science and Technology Program
Kazan Federal University
The experience of short-term study in Russia is valuable and unforgettable. The activities are divided into 2 parts. One is in Kazan and the other in Yelabuga.
For the first 3 weeks, I stayed in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, and joined in a laboratory of physics in Kazan Federal University(KFU). For another 1 week, I stayed in Yelabuga, located about 200km east far from Kazan, to participate in an internship program.
In the laboratory where I joined, research of chemical compounds at cryogenic temperatures was conducted. The research field was close to mine in KU in terms of materials being used but the experiences were my first ones because I had never conducted any experiments with compounds. The research activities in the laboratory made my knowledge of materials broaden. On weekends, I enjoyed sightseeing around Kazan with friends from KU. The places where we visited (Kazan Kremlin, Bauman Street, the Temple of All Religions, Bolgar historical area, etc...) were very wonderful and impressive. Especially, Kazan Kremlin was illuminated in the nighttime and I was moved by a beautiful scene.
For the last 1 week, I was in Yelabuga. There were several companies in a huge industrial area and I visited some of them. There was also an international school and children learned practical study such as design or programming. I was so surprised that elementary or junior high school students worked on complex and technical problems by themselves.
Through the program in Russia, I could see some beautiful views, have delicious food, and get great encounters with people from several countries. The experiences broadened my horizons. At the end of all, I would like to thank all of the people who planned and carried out this program.
